We have all heard it, Tech leaders saying AI is a risk and needs regulation or controls before the development gets out of hand. We have also seen the movies where a mega-corporation secretly continues AI research and gives a digital birth to a hexadecimal monster.

Are we living the movie?

In a way, yes we are .. there is no doubt that AI needs regulation, but the normal factors apply in these conditions, we are entrusting a technology marvel to a structures set by a group of predominantly older white males who don’t trust what they don’t understand. In short, lawmakers will very likely create the condition that causes underground or shadow investment and research into AI.

I am already on record as saying technology will find a way, that we need to adjust to the primary use cases, creative writers can now envision a short video to their work and see it happen with Sora. What would I look like with this suit/dress on? Let’s check with stable diffusion and find out. I would like to list all the bad things my Dungeons and Dragons group will encounter in the village, let’s check with ChatGPT.

Normal cases right?

Large Language models being able to write and compile programs on the fly, taught to expose and attack technical vulnerabiities in a fraction of the time it takes a foreign cyber attacker to do so. The thrilling race as white hat cyber knights produce their own AI/LLM to expose and notify of issues with a companies protection. These creations are not a movie, they are future reality. Both parties motivated by greed as one seeks to exploit and steal, the other seeks to protect and invoice for it. A distant third will be the open source implementations for the rest of the world, lagging behind the leaders by up to 6 months.

AI in direct marketing, searching the internet and making people believe they are talking to a human, opening up faster scam processes, faster direct marketing, more surveys, more investment begging.

So AI is bad right?

Every single medical case indexed and contextually aware for a surgeon to access? A system to review patient records for systematic symptoms that escape the view of a doctor that is concentrating on a single visit? Observability of immigration records, cross referenced with travel records and known cases to bring the net down on human trafficking. We have a wealth of data and we are simply not equipped to review it all against the context of a single case. Artificial Intelligence can benefit human kind in ways we have not yet dreamed up.

But please let the scientists hammer this one out, a self-regulating code of conduct that doesn’t involve the afore mentioned group of old white dudes has the better chance of avoiding a dystopian society, the treatment of reproductive rights in the land of the free is already a clarion call to start the descent into an Orwellian future, lets not add this.
